Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any Mahjong experience?
Yes but not much. . Mahjong 102 is designed for players who have learned the basics of American Mahjong.
What if I took Mahjong 101 a while ago and feel rusty?
Perfect. This class is designed to refresh what you learned and help you feel more comfortable playing on your own.
What will we cover in Mahjong 102?
We’ll review the flow of the game, Charleston, reading the NMJL card, choosing and changing hands, Jokers, exposures, and common questions that come up during play. Most importantly, you’ll get plenty of guided playing time.
Do I need to bring a Mahjong set?
Nope. We provide the tiles, racks, mats, and everything you’ll need to play.
Do I need an NMJL card?
Yes. We’ll be using the current National Mah Jongg League card throughout the class. If you don’t have one yet, no worries. Cards will be available to use during class.
Is this a strategy class?
Not quite. Mahjong 102 is about getting comfortable with the game and putting the basics into practice. We’ll certainly talk through decisions as we play, but deeper strategy comes later.
What if I still need help during the game?
That’s exactly what 102 is for. This is guided play, so questions are encouraged and we’ll work through the game together.
What should I bring?
Just bring yourself and, if you have one, your current NMJL card. Everything else will be ready for you.
What if I still have questions after class?
That is completely normal. Mahjong takes practice, and questions are part of learning the game. Additional classes and guided-play opportunities are available when you are ready to return to the table. Â You can always reach out to us at info@themahjongmingle.com.Â
