Mahjong 101: An Introduction to American Mahjong
Curious about Mahjong but not sure where to begin? Mahjong 101 is a welcoming, hands-on introduction created especially for brand-new players.
During this three-hour class, we will start with the basics and walk through the game together, one step at a time. You will become familiar with the tiles, learn how to read the National Mah Jongg League card, understand the Charleston and see how a complete game flows from the first pass to a winning hand.
This is not a class where you simply watch. You will work with the tiles, practice making decisions and begin playing with guidance and explanation along the way.
Everything is thoughtfully prepared for you, including premium Mahjong sets, racks, mats, and easy-to-follow teaching visuals. Just arrive ready to learn and enjoy your first seat at the table.

Do I need any Mahjong experience?
Not at all. Mahjong 101 is designed for complete beginners. No previous knowledge or experience is needed.
Do I need to bring anything?
No. Everything you need for the class is provided, including tiles, racks, mats, and teaching materials.
Do I need a National Mah Jongg League card?
You will use the current National Mah Jongg League card during class. Cards will be available for use, and we will explain how the card is organized and how to read it.
Is this American or Chinese Mahjong?
This class teaches American Mahjong using the official National Mah Jongg League rules and card.
Will we actually play during class?
Yes. You will work directly with the tiles and begin playing with step-by-step guidance. The class combines instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on practice.
Can I register by myself?
Absolutely. Many players attend on their own. Mahjong is naturally social, and you will be placed at a table with other new players.
What should I take after Mahjong 101?
Mahjong 102 is the next step. It offers a guided refresher and review of everything introduced in Mahjong 101 before you begin playing more independently.
What if I still have questions after class?
That is completely normal. Mahjong takes practice, and questions are part of learning the game. Additional classes and guided-play opportunities are available when you are ready to return to the table.
